About
I approach every project with the belief that editing is the art of human connection—using character and pacing to bridge the gap between the screen and the viewer. For me, a compelling edit isn't just about flashy cuts or technical assembly; it is about uncovering the character layers and authentic rhythms that make any environment or experience instantly relatable to an audience. This perspective was built during my teens and early twenties in theater. That is where I discovered my foundation in narrative structure and character mechanics. Seeing a story move a crowd taught me that great storytelling isn't just about entertainment—it's about finding the common ground that connects us. Today, I bring that exact lens to the cutting room. Software and workflows are essential tools, but my real job as an editor is to discover the emotional truth that allows a viewer to live a character's journey firsthand, no matter how foreign the environment or language may be. DOCUMENTARY & NON-FICTION Shaping raw footage requires finding the real human story underneath the subject matter. In editing the Netflix feature "The Seat", I looked past the Formula 1 racing spectacle to find the personal father-son story. On "7 Days in Syria," the war was secondary to the people’s lives who had been torn apart by it. With the music documentary "Party Dream," I cut past the standard rock-and-roll tropes to focus on the broken relationship between two brothers. SCRIPTED TELEVISION & COMEDY Scripted editing is a deep journey into character. My job is to look beyond the page to find exactly what makes a character tick. I see comedy as an extreme version of character development: the more a character is rooted in a human condition, the funnier they become when they act out in off-the-wall ways. On projects like the Emmy-winning series "Sherman's Showcase," the goal is to keep that human anchor intact, no matter how wild the environment gets. COMMERCIAL CAMPAIGNS & BRANDED CONTENT Short-form work and brand-produced series demand immediate human connection. I approach compressed timelines with the same focus on character and pacing as long-form features. Isolating the human element creates a fast, relatable bond between the viewer and the project. This character-first framework has driven high-impact campaigns and docuseries for companies including Spotify, WhatsApp, Spectrum, Walmart, Dole, and Kia. Let's collaborate and build something that connects us all. Reach out at gabrielrcullen@gmail.com or check out my work at www.gabrielcullen.com.
